Trichomoniasis

The following images are of a Greenfinch photographed in the garden today. The bird is looking extremely poorly and is probably suffering from Trichomoniasis. The trichomonad parasite lives in the upper digestive tract of the bird, and its actions progressively block the bird’s throat making it unable to swallow food, thus killing it by starvation. You can find information on the subject on the RSPB site along with a reporting procedure.

  1. The poor bird...it really does look ghastly.

Have you had your Nikon back yet Sam?
Steve sent mine to Surrey and I am still waiting to hear what has happened to it.
I am lost without it...kid gloves when I get it back.

  2. Terrible images I am sad to say, but not because of your photography of course. I just cannot bear to see any animal suffer Sam, but at least it serves to bring awareness. I have read about this before and this is what induced me to wash and clean the feeders regularly. All drinking and bathing water areas should be cleansed too. I buy a cleanser from the petshop for added protection. It is kind and safe to use.

  3. Oh, that is so sad. I've had a few House Finches around here that look poorly, and act weird. Found one dead one morning. Maybe they had a similar disease.

  4. No camera as yet, and I am lost without it. I took the shots with Lisas' camera. Reading about the disease, the parasite normally die through drying out, so I use a blowlamp on my bird table and boiling water on the feeders.

  5. I saw two blokes on the Pelagic last week looking like that. One was from Truro and the other from Doncaster. ;-)
